A Closer Look at the Benefits of Cold Plunges

Cold plunges seem to be a popular niche within the alternative wellness community, but did you know that science has shown that cold plunges actually have a variety of different benefits? This form of alternative therapy has something for just about everyone. From athletes to those just wanting to add a new form of self-care to their routine, cold plunges (also known as cold water immersion therapy) are popular for a very good reason.

What is a Cold Plunge?

A cold plunge is a form of immersion therapy designed to promote a variety of benefits including (but not limited to);

  • Inflammation reduction
  • Stress reduction
  • Reduces swelling
  • Boost Immunity
  • Improves injury recovery time

This form of physical therapy is used by individuals from all different backgrounds and walks of life. Various studies have documented the usefulness of this form of physical therapy. Let’s take a closer look at just a few of the ways some people use cold plunges to their benefit.

Cold Plunges Can Help With Recovery Time in Athletes

Did you know that cold plunges can help with recovery time after hard workouts or strenuous activity? According to information from Ohio State Health and Discovery, “When you get out of an ice bath, your muscle tissues and your entire body will begin to warm up, which causes your circulation to increase and your muscles to relax.”

In fact, a 2015 study published by the Journal of Physiology found that cold water immersion therapy helped with long-term muscle building during strength training. Their results found that “Cold water immersion attenuated long term gains in muscle mass and strength. It also blunted the activation of key proteins and satellite cells in skeletal muscle up to 2 days after strength exercise.”

Cold Plunges May Offer Cardiovascular Improvement

Many individuals will use a cold plunge as a way to improve their cardiovascular activity. In layman’s terms, this means an activity that increases heart rate and raises oxygen and blood flow.

According to a 2022 study that observed the use of cold water therapy in swimmers, their results found “that cold-adapted individuals showed an improvement in cardiovascular risk factor markers not seen in the non-adapted group. These findings imply a positive cardio-protective effect of regular CWI.”

Cold Plunges Can Help Improve Sleep

In order to get a good night’s sleep, sometimes you need to think outside the box. Cold plunges may actually be beneficial to helping improve sleep. A 2021 study shared by Frontiers in Sports and Active Living found that cold water immersion therapy was shown to be beneficial in the promotion of sleep in athletes. Limb movements and sleep arousals were particularly noted to have decreased.
