#17: 400 Hours in the Tank: Advanced Floating Techniques from Bowen

If you’ve ever wondered how to take your float sessions to the next level, you’re in for a treat. Bowen, one of our most experienced floaters, has spent over 400 hours in the tank. Yes, 400 hours! He’s practically a floating expert, and in this week’s episode of Altered States Unplugged, he’s sharing everything he’s learned about maximizing the benefits of floating.

From advanced visualization techniques to pre-float rituals and even how floating has influenced his life outside the tank, Bowen’s insights are a goldmine for anyone looking to deepen their float practice. So, if you’re ready to step up your floating game, keep reading!

Bowen’s journey with floating began like many of ours—he was seeking a way to unwind. But somewhere along the way, it became much more than just a stress reliever. “Floating has become my weekly dose of clarity,” he shared. “It’s the only time I truly feel like I can just let go.”

During our conversation, Bowen quoted Fyodor Dostoevsky, saying, ‘A man is sometimes met with the secrets he didn’t even want to tell himself.’ It’s this honesty, he explained, that floating has brought into his life. “When you’re in the tank, there’s no hiding from your thoughts. It’s just you and your mind, and it forces you to confront things you might normally push aside. But that’s where the growth happens.”

For Bowen, floating has been a tool for working through past trauma and unlocking a deeper level of self-awareness. Each session provides a space for reflection, healing, and—when he least expects it—breakthroughs. “I’ve solved problems in there, found clarity on decisions, and even revisited moments from my past that needed attention,” he said.

He described floating as a way to hit reset—not just on his body, but on his mind and spirit as well. “When I leave the tank, I feel lighter. It’s like the weight I didn’t even realize I was carrying has been lifted.”

Bowen also shared that floating has helped him let go of perfectionism. “When I first started, I felt like I had to ‘do it right,’ but I’ve learned that there’s no right or wrong way to float. Some days, I visualize goals or focus on solutions. Other days, I just drift. Either way, the benefits are undeniable.”

After 400 hours in the tank, Bowen has come to see floating as more than a wellness tool—it’s a practice. It’s where he shows up for himself every week, no matter what’s going on in his life. “I always leave the tank with more clarity and calm than I had going in. That’s why I keep coming back.”

If you’re looking to deepen your own float practice, Bowen’s advice is simple: trust the process. “Floating meets you where you are. Whether you’re there to relax, reflect, or recharge, the tank has a way of giving you exactly what you need.”
